On the 24th December 1942, he was posted to No. 106 Squadron at Syers-ton, Nottinghamshire, for operational flying.

On his first operational flight against a target at Dusseldorf on the night of the 27/28th January 1943, as captain of a Lancaster bomber aircraft, Sergeant Marsh did not return to base and was classified as missing, the result it its presumed of enemy action. Later information was received from a German official source through the International Red Cross , that he had lost his life, and in consequence he was reclassified as missing believed killed in action. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 27th January 1943.

Subsequently information from the same source disclosed that Sergeant Marsh was buried in the Military Cemetery at Venlo, Holland. After the cessation of hostilities his body was re-interred in the Jonkersbosch British Cemetery, Holland.
