42436. Flight Sergeant William MARSHALL.

William Marshall was born at Lyttleton on the 14th April, 1912. He was educated at the Manakau (was Manatau) Heads School, passing the Proficiency examination. When applying for enlistment in aircrew on the 10th January 1940, he was employed in farming by his mother at Orua Bay, Auckland.

Flight Sergeant Marshall was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on the 11th January 1942. an posted to Taieri on the 8th March for his elementary flying training, then on the 2nd May, to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram. Here, on the 27th July, he was awarded th flying badge, and promoted to Sergeant on the 17th October. Later, while serving in New Zealand, he was promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 1st June, 1943. Meantime, on the 30th October, 1942, he had joined No. 4 Squadron at Whenuapai, and flew Hudson aircraft.

Flight Sergeant Marshall was the Captain of a Hudson Aircraft which crashed into the sea near the mouth of the Rangitikei River, on the 24th August 1943, during a training flight. None of the bodies of the crew were recovered, and in due course the death of Flight Sergeant Marshall was presumed to have occurred at sea without trace on the 24th August, 1943.
