From this latter raid against Bordeaux undertaken on the night of the 16/17th October, 1942, the aircraft failed to return and all the crew including Sergeant Martin were classified as missing. Later information received from an official German source through the International Red Cross Committee, the Sergeant Martin had lost his life and in consequence he was reclassified to missing believed killed in action. Subsequent information disclosed that he was buried in the Insel Cemetery, Port Joinville, Ile D'Yeu France. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 16th October, 1942.

The crew contained three other New Zealanders, Pilot Officer M.S. Gilberd of Wellington. Flight Sergeant E.H. Howell of Wellington and Sergeant M.A. Torrance of Christchurch.
