In June, 1941 Flight Lieutenant Martin was attached to No. 222 (Natal) Squadron. On August 27th, 1941 the Squadron was ordered to escort nine Blenheims of Bomber Command to bomb targets in the Lille area. The squadron was not attacked until the return journey when enemy fighters carried out numerous attacks on the rear and sides of the Squadron. Flight Lieutenant Martin was seen by observers until crossing the English Channel when a collision occurred in which two or more of our aircraft were involved. No one saw Flight Lieutenant Martin attacked by fighters or hit by anti-aircraft fire but it is presumed that he was involved in this collision as he failed to return to base and was reported missing after this air operation. Subsequently the death of Flight Lieutenant Martin was officially presumed to have occurred on the 27th August 1941.
