On the 29th October 1942, Sergeant Martin was a member of the crew of a Wellington bomber which took off on air operations to attack the target of Essen. The aircraft failed to return to its base and all its crew including Sergeant Martin were classified as missing. Due time having elapsed his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 29th October 1942 as the result of air operations. Extensive search over the route taken by the aircraft has led to the assumption that Sergeant Martin (redacted lives) together with the other members of the crew lost their lives at sea.

The aircraft contained two other New Zealanders, Pilot Officer R.L. Meredith of Otorohanga and Flight Sergeant R.W. Urwin of Rastini.
