As a member of the crew of a Wellington bomber he left England on the 4th May 1943 and with halts at Gibraltar and at landing grounds in North Africa he arrived at Kairouan in the Western Desert on the 30th May and reported to No. 70 Squadron. With this squadron from landing grounds in the Western Desert and in Italy where the squadron subsequently moved, as bomb aimer of a Wellington bomber he took part in thirty four operational flights including attacks on Olbia, Cagliari and Pabillonis in Sardinia; Comiso and Pallozolo in Sicily; Salerno (2), Copdichino, Naples (2), Foggis, Taranto, Averso, Viterbo (2) Pompei (2) Pisa, Formia (2) Terracina, Furbara, Porto Civitanova, Pistoria, Stefana, in Italy; together with two attacks on objectives in the battle areas in Italy. He also attacked Sofia in Bulgaria and Turnal Sverin and Bucharest in Rumania.

Flight Lieutenant Masters was a member of the crew of a Wellington bomber which took off on air operations on the night of the 7/8th May, 1944 to attack the main industrial area of Bucharest, Rumania. The aircraft failed to return to its base and all the members of the crew including Flight Lieutenant Masters were classified as missing. Later, information was received from the Allied Control Commission in Rumania which reported the finding of the Wellington bomber and the body of Flight Lieutenant Masters who was buried at Talpa, Bascoveni, in the state of Viasco. In consequence of this information he was classified as missing believed killed in action. Due time having elapsed his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 8th May 1944 as the result of air operations.

Subsequently, it was learned that the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross had been made to Flight Lieutenant Masters with effect from the 8th May 1944, the citation reading as follows:-
