John Mather was born at Workington, England, on the 14th May, 1897. He served with the Medical Corps of the Royal Naval Division from 1915 to 1919, and afterwards came to New Zealand in 1923. When applying for enlistment in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, on the 16th December, 1941, he was employed as a storeman by John Court Limited at Auckland.

Aircraftman Mather was enlisted at Rongotai on the 18th April 1942, and posted to Hobsonville on the 26th May for duty as Medical Orderly, having served with the Auckland Division of St. Johns Ambulance for several years. He was also employed by the Auckland Hospital Board as a male nurse.

Aircraftman Mather died of illness at the Auckland Hospital on the 8th November, 1942, and was buried in the Waikumete Cemetery, Auckland.
