They were, Zeals, Wiltshire; Ibsley, Hampshire; Skeabrae, Orkney Islands; Sumburgh, Shetland Islands; Church Stanton, Somerset; Redhill, Surrey; Kenley, Surrey; and Perranport, Cornwall. As pilot of a Spitfire fighter aircraft he carried out a number of fighter sweeps, and patrols in the vicinity of Brest. On 2 occasions he damaged enemy U-boats. Early in November, 1943, he was posted to No. 130 (Punjab) Squadron, with which he operated from Catterick and Scorton both in Yorkshire. From the latter base he carried out one sector reconnaissance flight. On the 16th November, he proceeded on attachment to Ayr, Scotland.

On the 25th November, 1943, F/Sgt. Mathieson was pilot of a Spitfire aircraft which was involved in a collsion with another aircraft on the ground. The Spitfire overturned and caught fire, F/Sgt. Mathieson losing his life. He was buried with Service Honours in the Illogan Churchyard, Illogan, Cornwall.
