42782 Leading Aircraftsman James Hylton MEAD.
Parents: Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Mead of Silvertream, WELLINGTON.

James Mead was born at Auckland on the 29th January 1923. He received his secondary education at the Wellington Technical College, first at day school, and afterwards at night classes. When applying for enlistment in aircrew on the 2nd February 1941, he was employed as a furrier by Mooneys Limited of Wellington.

Leading Aircraftsman Mead was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on the 26th January, 1942, and moved with the Wing to Rotorua on the 16th February. He was posted to Harewood on the 13th June, for his elementary flying training.

Leading Aircraftsman Mead was the pilot of a Tiger Moth aircraft which collided with another aircraft near Harewood, on the 25th July 1942, Leading Aircraftsman Mead losing his life in the crash. He was buried in the Karori Cemetery, Wellington.
