George Mee was born at Dunedin on the 1st May, 1917. His secondary education was received at Waitaki Boys' High School where he passed the matriculation examination. He afterwards proceeded to Victoria University College to study commercial subjects. The sports in which he took part were cricket, rugby, tennis and swimming. His civilian occupation was that of a clerk in the Social Security Department, Wellington. In March 1940 he applied for war service in the R.N.Z.A.F.

Pilot Officer Mee was enlisted for aircrew training on the 27th July, 1941 at the Initial Training Wing, Levin and was posted on the 7th September to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood, to commence his flying training. On the 17th December he embarked for Canada to continue his training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after his arrival in Canada, Pilot Officer Mee was posted on the 6th January, 1942 to No. 3 Service Flying Training School, Calgary, Alberta. While here, on the 24th April, 1942 he was awarded his flying badge and received his promotion to sergeant. Later, on the 24th October 1942 he was promoted to flight sergeant. A year later he was further promoted to warrant officer, and on the 20th January, 1944 commissioned in the rank of pilot officer. Meanwhile, on the 31st May, 1942 he had been posted for further training to No. 122 (Composite) Squadron, Patricia Bay, British Colombia. He remained with this squadron until the 6th April, 1943 on which date he proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia to await embarkation for the United Kingdom.
