February arriving at No. 2 (R.N.Z.A.F) Personnel Despatch & Reception Centre, Brighton on the 19th April. He was posted to No. 61 Operational Training Unit, (redacted Redual) Rednal, Shropshire, on the 9th May for conversion to Spitfire fighter aircraft, and to No. 64 Squadron of 84 Group on the 1st June. This group formed part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force supporting the invasion of Europe from its bases in South Eastern England as pilot of Spitfire Aircraft he took part in twenty operational flights being patrols over the beach head on Normandy, convoy patrols over shipping in the channel, fighter cover for our bombers and rocket projector aircraft operating over Northern France, and fighter sweeps over enemy territory.

Flight Lieutenant Meharry was pilot of a Spitfire fighter engaged on the 5th August 1944 in a fighter sweep over enemy territory. He attacked a heavily armed trawler off Lezardrieux, Brittany and failed to return to his base, being consequently classified as missing. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 5th August 1944. A post war casualty search revealed that he was buried in the British Cemetery at Hottot-Les-Bagues, Cotes-due-Nord, France.
