He proceeded to No. 10 Operational Training Unit, Abingdon, Berkshire, on the 14th September, 1943 to crew up and complete his training.

Flying Officer Meldrum was a member of the crew of a Whitley bomber aircraft engaged in a training flight on the night of the 14th November, 1943. The aircraft crashed near Newbury, Berkshire, owing to icing up and becoming out of control, and Flying Officer Meldrum lost his life. He was buried in the Royal Air Force Regional Cemetery, Botley, Oxford.
