Arthur Merewether was born in Wanganui on October 12th 1916 and received his secondary education at the Wanganui Collegiate School up to Matriculation standard. He was accepted for a short servcie commission in the Royal Air Force and embarked for the United Kingdom late in 1938.

On his arrival in England he was granted a short service commission as Pilot Officer for four years in the General Duties Branch of the Royal Air Force. He enlisted at the Central Flying School, White Waltham, on January 23rd 1939 and proceeded early in April to No. 1 Depot, Uxbridge, on a short disciplinary course. Later in the same month he was posted to No. 13 Flying Training School, Drem. On October 21st he was transferred to No. 108 Squadron, Bicester, thence early in 1940 to No. 101 (B) Squadron, West Raynham. In late January he was further posted to No. 214 Squadron, Stradishall and early in March to No. 38 Squadron, Marham.

Pilot Officer Merewether was a member of the crew of a Wellington bomber aircraft detailed to proceed on reconnaissance operations off the Cornish Coast on April 13th 1940 and which failed to return to base. Later information disclosed that the aircraft crashed in the sea approximately 20 miles from Whitby on the night of April 13-14th, 1940. All the crew, including Pilot Officer Mereweather, lost their lives at sea.
