Flight Lieutenant Mewa was the pilot of a Mitchell bomber engaged on the 19th August, 1944, in support of the Army in the Falaise Gap in France. After take off nothing further was heard of the aircraft or the crew and Flight Lieutenant was posted as missing.

In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 19th August 1944.
