Alec Miller was born at Palmerston North on August 2nd, 1924. He was educated at the Auckland Normal School and at Kings College and on leaving school in 1940 was employed as an Insurance Clerk by the South British Insurance Company. He joined No. 3 Squadron of the A.T.C. at Auckland and with his parents' consent he applied for War Service in July, 1942. He was mobilised in December 1942 and after a year's ground training went to I.T.W. at Rotorua where his keenness to become an Air Gunner resulted in his being posted to Ohakea in February 1944.

There he had practical training on Oxford aircraft and in April was posted to No. 3 B.R. Squadron as Sergeant Air Gunner. In a Ventura crew captained by P/O Baird, he went forward to Espiritu Santo in May 1944.

On June 9th, 1944, Sergeant Miller lost his life when a Ventura crashed on landing on the Pallikulo landing ground at Espiritu Santos. The three others killed in the same accident were W/O R.B.I Wakely, W/O R. Payne and W/O R.M. Tarrant.
