Flight Lieutenant Miller was the Captain of a Lancaster bomber engaged during the night of 11/12th July, 1942 in air operations to Danzig. The aircraft failed to return to its base and all the crew including Flight Lieutenant Miller were classified as missing. In due cousre his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 11th July, 1942.

On the 27th July the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross was made known, the citation accompanying the award reading as hereunder:-

"Flight Lieutenant Miller is an outstanding captain and has carried out numerous successful sorties. He twice carried out important mining operations in the Baltic, for which he was specially selected in view of the difficult weather conditions prevailing on major targets. He has also secured night photographs which have proved the excellent bombing results. He has always displayed outstanding skill and determination.
