Henry Miller was born at Hastings on the 26th September 1914. His secondary education was received at the Technical College, Masterton, where he passed the Senior Free Place Examination. His principal sport was rugby and he played for the school first fifteen. He was employed as an aerodrome clerk by the Hawkes Bay & East Club Aero Club with which club he was also an active flying member. In June 1938 he applied for enrolment in the Civil Reserve of Pilots and on being accepted was successful in gaining his "A" Flying Licence. In December 1938 he applied for a short service commission in the R.A.F. but was unsuccessful. On the outbreak of war he applied for immediate service in the R.N.Z.A.F.

Sergeant Miller was enlisted for aircrew training on the 26th October, 1939 at the Initial Training Wing, Levin and was posted on the 20th November to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, New Plymouth, to commence his service flying training. At the conclusion of this course, he was posted on the 28th December, 1939 to No. 2 Service Flying Training School, Blenheim. While here, on the 27th March, 1940 he was awarded his flying badge. His promotion to sergeant was made on the 4th May 1940 and following this on the 24th May he embarked on the "Mataroa" at Wellington to proceed to the United Kingdom.

Having arrived in England during June 1940, Sergeant Miller was held at the R.A.F. Depot, Uxbridge, Middlesex, until posted on the 27th July, 1940 to
