427220 Flight Sergeant James Stuart MILLER.

James Miller was born at Otautau on the 7th March, 1911. He received his secondary education at Dunedin Technical High School, and passed the Public Service Entrance examination. After leaving school he continued his education by night classes in horticuture at the same institution. He was employed in various capacities as a gardener and in farm work, and at the time of his making application for enlistment in aircrew on the 14th May 1941, was dairy farming on his own account at Broad Bay, Dunedin.

Flight Sergeant Miller was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua on the 11th July, 1942, and embarked for Canada on the 24th December 1942 under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

F/Sgt. Miller arrived in Canada on the 11th January, 1943, and on the 24th of the same month was posted to No. 8 Bombing and Gunnery School, Lethbridge, Alberta, and thence - on the 2nd May to No. 2 Air Observer's School, Edmonton, Alberta, where - on the 11th June, 1943 - he was awarded his air bomber's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 11th December, 1943. Meanwhile - on the 23rd June, 1943 - he proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

F/Sgt. Miller arrived at No. 12 (RNZAF) Personnel Despatch and Receiving Centre, Brighton, on the 8th July and on the 17th of the same month was posted to No. 4 (Observer) Advanced Flying Unit, West Freugh, Scotland, for his advanced flying training and thence - on the 21st September to No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Oakley, and Westcott, both in Buckinghamshire, where he crewed up and completed his training as air bomber on Wellington bomber aircraft. During March, 1944 he converted to Stirling bomber aircraft at No. 1657 Conversion Unit, Stradishall, Suffolk, and on the 24th of the month was posted to No. 75 (NZ) Squadron at Mepal, Cambridgeshire.
