Keith Miller was born at Auckland on the 29th September 1916. His education was received at the Te Awamutu District High School where he passed the matriculation examination. While at school he played rugby and cricket in the first fifteen and first eleven respectively and in 1934 he weon both the athletic and swimming championships. His occupation was that of a clerk in the Public Works Department at Te Kuiti. In May, 1937 he applied for a short service commission in the Royal Air Force that was unsuccessful. On the outbreak of hostilities he forthwith applied for war service with the R.N.Z.A.F.

Sergeant Miller was enlisted for aircrew training on the 2nd July, 1940 at the Ground Training School, Levin and was posted on the 29th July to No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School, Taieri, to commence his flying training. Following this he proceeded on the 28th September, 1940 to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram, and while here on the 12th December 1940 he was awarded his flying badge. His promotion to Sergeant was made on the 18th January, 1941. On the 30th January, 1941 he embarked on the "Aorangi" at Auckland to proceed to the United Kingdom.

The journey was made by way of Canada, and Sergeant Miller arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 6th March, 1941. His first posting in England was on the 10th March to No. 52 Operational Training Unit, Debden, Essex, where he completedh is training in Hurricane fighter aircraft, prior to being posted on the 22nd April, 1941 to No. 485 (N.Z.) Squadron, Leconfield, Yorkshire and commencing operational flying.
