Pilot Officer Mitchell was the pilot of a Hurricane aircraft engaged on patrol of the forward area on the 2nd March, 1940. In an attack on an enemy aircraft by his formation, his aircraft was hit in the engine and he had to force land about a mile south of Sarre Union.

He was buried in the Chambiers (Metz) Cemetery, France.
