(indented) standing pilot and a fine leader. During his first tour he participated in operations over Europe and later in the North African campaign. In April, 1944, while engaged on a bomber escort a number of enemy fighters attempted an attack. Acting Flight Lieutenant Montgomerie immediately engaged one of the enemy fighters which he destroyed before resuming his escort duties. Nine days later when he was flying in a formation of eight aircraft, fifteen enemy fighters were engaged and he destroyed one. Altogether Acting Flight Lieutenant Montgomerie has destroyed at least three enemy aircraft and damaged others."

Flight Lieutenant Montgomerie was the pilot of a Spitfire fighter aircraft which took off on a reconnaissance patrols, on the 26th August, 1944, over the Gorgona - Spezia area and crashed ast Rosginano at 8.10 p.m. He received injuries consisting of lacerations to the scalp from which he subsequently passed away at 3 a.m. on the 27th August. Information was received that he had been laid to rest with service honours in the United States Military Cemetery, Follonica, Italy on the 27th August, 1944. Later information was received stating that his body had been re-interred in the Florence British Empire Cemetery, also in Italy.
