On the 30th May 1943, Flying Officer Moorhead was pilot of a Spitfire fighter engaged a shipping reconnaissance which crashed in the sea 20 miles south of Worthing during conditions of bad visibility. No trace was found of Flying Officer Moorhead and he was consequently classified as missing. Due time having elapsed his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 30th May, 1943.
