Milton Moosman was born at Wanganui on the 6th June 1920, and received his secondary education at the Technical College there. After leaving school he played football for the Pirates Club and also rowed for the Union Boating Club. From the time of leaving school in 1936 until applying for enlistment in aircrew on the 10th December 1940 he was employed in the plumbing trade by his father at Wanganui.

Warrant Officer Moosman was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, on the 4th October 1941 and embarked on the 17th November to Canada for training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after arrival in Canada he was posted on the 4th December to No. 2 Signal School, Calgary, Alberta, and then on the 20th June 1942, to No. 5 Bombing and Gunnery School, Dafoe, Saskatchewan. Here on the 20th July he was awarded the Wireless Operator Air Gunner's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 20th January 1943, and while in the United Kingdom to Warrant Officer on the 20th January 1944. Meantime, on the 5th August 1942, he had proceeded to No. 5 Air Observer's School, Winnipeg, for staff duties there, and then to No. 34 Operational Training Unit, Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick on the 5th February 1943, for training on Ventura aircraft. On the 16th May he was posted to No. 1 "Y' Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Warrant Officer Moosman arrived at No. 12 Royal New Zealand Air Force, Personnel Despatch and Reception Centre, Brighton on the 5th June, and remained there until posted on the 17th August to No. 23 Operational Training Unit, Stratford-on-Avon. Here he crewed up and completed his training on Wellington bomber aircraft before converting during January 1944, to Halifax and then to Lancaster aircraft at No. 1679 Conversion Unit, Wombleton, Yorkshire. On the 15th February he was posted to No. 426 Squadron at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire.
