Arthur Morgan was born at Christchurch on the 29th March, 1915. He received his secondary education at the Forbury School, Dunedin, afterwards continuing by night classes at the Dunedin Technical College. At the time of enlisting in the R.N.Z.A.F. on the 17th April 1941, he was employed as a factory foreman by the Wholesale Milk Supply Company of Dunedin.

Flight Sergeant Morgan was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 2nd November 1941 and embarked for Canada on the 28th December for training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

He arrived at No .5 Manning Depot, Brandon, Manitoba, on the 22nd January 1942 and was posted on the 1st February to No. 2 Wireless School, Calgary, Alberta, and then on the 14th September to No. 1 Bombing and Gunnery School, Jarvis, Ontario. Here on the 12th October he was awarded the Wireless Operator Air Gunner's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. While in the United Kingdom on the 1st June 1943, he was further promoted to Flight Sergeant. Meantime, on the 14th October 1942 he had proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom.

Flight Sergeant Morgan arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 5th February 1943 and remained there until posted to No. 3 (Observers) Advanced Flying Unit, Cranwell, Lincolnshire, on the 31st March for his advanced signals training. On the 19th May he proceeded to No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Westcott, Buckinghamshire, for crewing-up and completion of his training on Wellington bomber aircraft, then on the 29th July to No. 1657 Conversion Unit, Stradishall, Suffolk. Here he converted to Stirling bomber aircraft and on the 30th August was posted to No. 218 Gold Coast Squadron, Downham Market, Norfolk. From this base as Wireless Operator Air Gunner of Stirling bomber aircraft he took part in five operational flights, the targets including Boulogne, Mont Lucon and Modane in France and a minelaying sortie off the Frisian Islands.
