Robert Morgan was born on the 18th July, 1918, at Auckland, and received his secondary education at Auckland Grammar School, where he gained the University entrance and School Certificate. The sports in which he was interested included cricket, tennis, and hockey. After leaving school he was employed as a clerk by the Transport Board, Auckland, and was so employed at the time of his making application for aircrew training on the 18th August, 1941.

Flight Sergeant Morgan was enlisted on the 20th February, 1942, at Rongotai, and employed there and at Hobsonville on ground duties until he was remustered to aircrew and posted on the 3rd September, 1942, to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua. On the completion of his initial training he was posted on the 12th October to No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School, Taieri, where his flying training was terminated and he was posted on the 24th November to Rongotai. Here he was remustered to air observer and reposted on the 4th February 1943, to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua. On the completion of his initial training as an air observer he embarked on the 5th May 1943 to Canada under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after arrival in Canada, F/Sgt. Morgan was posted on the 13th June, 1943, to No. 6 Bombing and Gunnery School, Mountain View, Ontario. On the 21st August, he proceeded to No. 8 Air Observer's School, Quebec City, Quebec, where - on the 14th January, 1944 - he was awarded his air navigator's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. He was promoted to Flight Sergeant six months later. On the 26th January, 1944 he proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia, for embarkation to the United Kingdom.
