Parents: Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Morrison of Wellington.

Born at Wellington on the 16th May 1923, John Morrison received his secondary education at Scots College, where he passed the Matriculation examination and afterwards proceeded to Victoria University College to study law. The games he played were rugby, cricket and tennis. He was employed as a law clerk by a firm of Wellington solicitors when applying in August 1942, for war service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Flying Officer Morrison was enlisted on the 7th December 1942 at Royal New Zealand Air Force Station Waipapakauri, and employed on ground duties while awaiting training for aircrew. He was posted on the 31st March 1943 to Royal New Zealand Air Force Station, New Plymouth where he was similarily employed. On the 15th April he was remustered to Pilot under training and posted to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua, proceeding on the (was 29th) 27th May to No. 2 Elementary Flying Training School, Ashburton, to commence his Flying Training. On the 15th August he embarked for Canada to continue his training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

Shortly after his arrival in Canada, Flying Officer Morrison was posted on the 4th September to No. 39 Service Flying Training School, Swift Current, Saskatchewan. While here, on the 23rd December he was awarded his flying badge and promoted to Sergeant, although this latter was superseded by his being commissioned as a Pilot Officer with effect from the same date. Later when in Scotland on the 23rd June 1944 he was promoted to Flying Officer. Meanwhile, on the 15th January 1944 he had been posted to No. 1 General Reconnaissance School, Summerside, Prince Edward Island. On the 3rd April (redacted 1944) he proceeded to No. 1 "Y" Depot, Lachine, Quebec to await embarkation for the United Kingdom.

Having arrived in England on the 19th April 1944, Flying Officer Morrison was held at No. 12 Personnel Reception Centre, Brighton until posted on the 21st June to No. 14 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit
