R.A.F. 40635 Pilot Officer Edgar Elliott MORTON (surname underlined)
Mother Mrs. L.E. Duncan of Auckland (city & surname underlined)

Edgar Morton was born at Te Aroha on the 8th February 1915 and received his secondary education at King's College, Auckland attaining matriculation standard. After leaving school he entered a legal firm as a law clerk but as this occupation did not appear to offer a reasonable chance of advancement, he left New Zealand in 1936 to take a position in Sydney, South Wales. While here he applied for a Short Service commission in the Royal Air Force and on being provisionally selected, embarked in November 1937 to proceed to the United Kingdom.

On arriving in England he reported to Air Ministry where he was confirmed in his appointment to a Short Service commission as a pilot officer and instructed to proceed on the 17th January 1938 to the Civil Flying School, Ayr, Scotland, to commence his flying training. This elementary training completed, he was posted on the 26th March, 1938 to No. 1 Depot, Uxbridge, Middlesex, for as short course in service procedure at the conclusion of which he resumed his flying training with No. 10 Flying Training School, Ternhill, Shropshire. While here he was awarded his Flying Badge. On passing out of the Flying Training School he proceeded on the 14th November 1938 to the School of Air Navigation, Manston, Kent, and, his training completed, early in 1939 he was posted to No. 52 (Bomber) Squadron, for squadron flying duties. On the outbreak of war he attended an anti-gas war course and was posted on the 27th November 1939 to No. 103 Squadron, part of the Advanced Air Striking Force operating from airfields in France.

On the 12th May 1940 Pilot Officer Morton was pilot of a Battle bomber detailed to attack a bridge near Bouillon, eight miles north east of Sedan, France. His aircraft failed to return to its base and both its occupants were classified as missing believed killed. No news was received of Pilot Officer Morton and after due time had elapsed his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 12th May 1940 as the result of air operations. A post war casualty search located the grave in the Curfox Cemetery, Luxembourg.
