Donald Muir was born at Gisborne on the 21st September, 1915, and was educated there. On leaving school he was employed by the Gisborne Gas Company and in 1935 he proceeded to England to undergo a Gas Instructional Course.

While in England, hostilities broke out and Sergeant Muir applied for enlistment in aircrew in the Royal Air Force on the 4th May 1940. He was mobilised at No. 3 Reception Depot, Padgate, on the 6th June and on the 11th of the month posted to No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In September he embarked for Canada and continued his training at No. 10 Service Flying Training School, Dauphin, Manitoba, and later at No. 32 Service Flying Training School,. On the 2nd February, 1941, while at this Unit, he was awarded the Flying Badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant.

From this base as a member of the crew of Wellington bomber aircraft he carried out three operational flights including to Gibralta and Malta. On July, 19th he proceeded by air to Kabrit, Egypt where he continued operational flying as a member of No. 148 Squadron.

With this Squadron he participated in a further nineteen operational flights, the targets including Benghazi (11) and Derna in Libya, Corinth (2) Eleusis, and Piraeus in Greece and Crete.

On the 6th November 1941 Sergeant Muir was the pilot of a Wellington bomber flying in the vicinity of Kabrit when it crashed near the aerodrome, all members of the crew, including Sergeant Muir losing their lives. He was buried in the Geneifa Military Cemetery, Egypt.
