Early in January 1944 he converted to Lancaster bomber aircraft and was posted to No. 7 Squadron at Oakington, Cambridge. With this Unit he took part in a further twenty-two operational flights the targets including Berlin, Leipzig, Schweinfurt, Augsberg, Stuttgart, Nurenberg, Aachen (2), Cologne, Karlsruhe, and Duisburg in Germany, Seingnier, Laon, Aulnoye, Louvain, Angers, Fougeres, Rennes, Tours, Le Havre and Lens in France.

Flight Sergeant Muir was the Air Gunner of a Lancaster bomber engaged on the night of the 15/16th June 1944 in air operations against the latter target. The aircraft failed to return to its base and all the crew including Flight Sergeant Muir were classified as missing. Later information was received from and official German source through the International Red Cross that he had lost his life and in consequence he was reclassified as missing believed killed in action.

In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 16th June, 1944. Subsequently, information was received that he was buried in the Communal Cemetery, at Anseghem, which is approximately 10 miles east of Courtrai, Belgium.
