403972 Flight Sergeant Clive Herbert MULHOLLAND.
Mother: Mrs. K. Mulholland of Wellington.

Born at Wellington on the 3rd May 1915, Clive Mulholland received his secondary education at Wellington College where he passed the matriculation examination. He subsequently furthered his studies by taking a commercial course with a correspondence school. The games he played were rugby, cricket and rugby league at which latter game he was outstanding and represented Wellington. His civilian occupation was that of a clerk in the Army Department, Wellington. In September 1939 he applied for war service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Flight Sergeant Mulholland was enlisted for aircrew training on the 27th October 1940 at the Ground Training School, (was Weraroa) Levin, and was posted on the 24th November (redacted 1940) to No. 3 Elementary Flying Training School, Harewood, to commence his flying training. This training completed, he was posted on the 17th January 1941 to No. 2 Service Flying Training School, Woodbourne. While here on the 3rd March (redacted 1941) he was awarded his flying badge, and the following month on the 12th April he received his promotion to sergeant. Later, when in England on the 1st November 1941 he was further promoted to flight sergeant. Meanwhile on the 29th April 1941 he had embarked for the United Kingdom.

The journey was made by way of Canada and Flight Sergeant Mulholland reached England on the 29th June 1941 and reported to No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth, where he was held until posted on the 5th July (redacted 1941) to No. 2 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit, Catfoss, Yorkshire. At this unit he crewed-up and completed his training on Blenheim reconnaissnce aircraft prior to being posted on the 15th September (redacted 1941) to No. 248 Squadron, Bircham Newton, Norfolk. He remained with this squadron until the 16th December (redacted 1941) when he was posted to the Overseas Aircraft Despatch Unit, Honeybourne, Worcestershire, for training in long range flying. On the 29th December as pilot of a Beaufighter fighter bomber he left England on posting to No. 252 Squadron, stationed in Egypt.
