Willam Mulholland was born at Dannevirke on the 12th March 1922. His secondary educaiton was received at the Pukekohe High School where he gained his School Certificate. He afterwards furthered his studies by attending night classes at the Wellington Technical College. He was a member of the High School first cricket eleven and also took part in rowing and swimming. His civilian occupation was that of a clerk in the Lands and Survey Department, Auckland. IN March 1942 he applied for war service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Pilot Officer Mulholland was enlisted for aircrew training on the 30th November 1941, at the Initial Training Wing, Levin, and was posted on the 11th January 1942 to No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School, Whenuapai, to commence his flying training. Following this, he was posted on the 9th March to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram, and while here on the 5th May he was awarded his flying badge. He was promoted to Sergeant on the 11th July 1942, to Flight Sergeant on the 15th May, 1943, and on the 26th September 1943 was commissioned as a Pilot Officer. Meanwhile, on the 20th July, 1942, he had embarked for the United Kingdom.

The journey was made by way of Canada and Pilot Officer Mulholland arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth on the 1st September 1942, and posted on the 22nd September to No. 6 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, Little Rissington, Gloucestershire. His training here was interrupted on the 16th October 1942 while he attended and instrument flying course with No. 1517 Beam Approach Training Flight, Wattisham, Suffolk. At the conclusion of this course, he resumed his training with the Advanced Flying Unit. This completed, he was posted on the 21st December, 1942 to No. 2 Anti-aircraft Co-Operation Unit, Gosfort, Hampshire for duty as a staff pilot, and then on the 10th October 1943 to No. 1623 Anti-aircraft Flight, Roborough,
