F/O Mulligan was pilot of a Hampden bomber aircraft which took off from Lindholme, Yorkshire - to which base No. 50 Squadron had moved - on the 7th December, 1940 on air operations and failed to return to its base. All members of the crew were classified as missing. Later his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 8th December, 1940.
