43496 Flight Sergeant Jack Womack MUMMERY.

Jack Mummery was born at Palmerston North on the 26th July, 1924, and received his secondary education at the Palmerston North Boys' High School, reaching the University Entrance standard. He was a member of the 1st Hockey XI for 4 years and also played cricket, tennis and basketball. When applying for enlistment in aircrew, on the 10th September, 1942 he was employed by the Agricultural Department at Palmerston North, and was serving as a member of the Air Training Corps with the rank of Flight Sergeant.

Flight Sergeant Mummery enlisted at Omaka on the 8th January 1943 and employed later at Taieri, New Plymouth, Rotorua and Hamilton, on ground duties, until remustered to aircrew and posted to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua on the 22nd July 1943. He proceeded to Taieri on the 13th November for his elementary flying training, and then, on the 15th January 1944 to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram. Here, he was awarded the flying badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant, on the 13th May 1944. Later, while serving in New Zealand he was further promoted to Flight Sergeant on the 13th November 1944. Meantime, he was posted overseas to No. 4 Squadron at Nausori, Fiji, on the 10th June, and completed a tour of operations before returning to New Zealand on the 5th September. After a period of leave, Flight Sergeant Mummery reported to New Plymouth on the 30th September, serving there, and at Swanson, Ohakea, and Whenuapai, until again embarking for overseas in the Pacific Area with No. 4 Squadron at Los Negros on the 18th May 1945.

Flight Sergeant Mummery was the pilot of a Ventura aircraft which crashed into the sea off Mokerang Airfield, Los Negros, on the 29th August 1945. All the crew, including Flight Sergeant Mummery, were classified as missing believed killed. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred at sea without trace on the 29th August 1945.
