Eric Munro was born in Auckland on July 12th 1912 and received his secondary education at the Mount Albert Grammar School up to Matriculation standard. At school his favourite sports were athletics and rugby football. Later he became a member of the Whangarei Minature Rifle Club. At the time of making his application for Aircrew training for War Service on August 22nd 1941 he was employed as Copy Supervisor, National Broadcasting Service, Dunedin.

Pilot Officer Munro was enlisted at Whenuapai as Aircrafthand on Aerodrome Defence duties on Mar 30th 1942. After attending a course at the Army School of Instruction he was granted a temporary commission as Pilot Officer on January 6th 1943 and posted to Taieri shortly afterwards on further Aerodrome Defence duties. He was later remustered to Aircrew and proceeded to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua, in April thence to Harewood for his elementary flying training on May 29th. On July 24th he was posted to Wigram for his service training where he was awarded the Flying Badge on September 20th, 1943.

Pilot Officer Munro lost his life in an aircraft accident at West Melton, Canterbury on September 29-30th 1943 when his Oxford aircraft struck rising ground while engaged on a dual training night flight. Pilot Officer William Raymond Brant, the instructor also lost his life in a crash. Pilot Officer Munro was buried in the Soldiers Section, Bromley Cemetery.
