Thomas Munro was born in Edinburgh on the 13th December 1910 and at an early age accompanied his parents to New Zealand (redacted when they came to this country to make their home here). His secondary education was received at Otago Boys' High School and he afterwards furthered his studies by attending night classes at King Edward Technical College. The games he played were rugby and tennis. His civilian occupation was that of a clerk in the Treasury Department. In June 1941 he applied for war service in the R.N.Z.A.F.

Sergeant Munro was enlisted for aircrew training on the 7th September, 1941 at the Initial Training Wing, Levin and was posted on the 18th October (redacted 1941) to No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School, Taieri, to commence his flying training. (redacted This completed, he was posted) and then on the 29th November (redacted 1941) to No. 1 Service Flying Training School, Wigram, (redacted and) While here on the 10th January, 1942 he was awarded his flying badge, (redacted The following month) and on the 28th (redacted February) of the following month (redacted he) received his promotion to sergeant. On the 8th March, 1942 he embarked for the United Kingdom.

Having arrived in England on the 19th April 1942, Sergeant Munro was held at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth until posted on the 16th May (redacted 1942) to No. 6 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, Little Rissington, Gloucestershire. On the 16th June his training here was interrupted while he attended and instrument flying course with No. 1513 Beam Approach Training Flight, Honington, Lincolnshire. At the conclusion of this course he resumed his training with the Advanced Flying Unit. The next stage of his training was his posting on the 21st July, 1942 to No. 11 Operational Training Unit, Bassingbourne, Hertfordshire to crew-up and train on Wellington bombers.

While with the Operational Training Unit, on the night of the 10th September, 1942 Sergeant Munro took part in a bombing attack on Bremen.
