414661 Sergeant Albert Leus MURRAY.

Albert Murray was born at Auckland on the 20th September, 1918. He received his secondary education at the Seddon Memorial Technical College, taking the electrical engineering course. He afterwards attended night classes at Druleigh College in wireless operating, while employed as an electrician by George V. Mullinger Limited of Auckland.

Sergeant Murray was enlisted at the Initial Training Wing, Levin on the 17th August 1941 and posted to New Plymouth, late in September for his elementary flying training. He proceeded to No. 3 Service Flying Training School, Ohakea on the 8th November where he was awarded the flying badge on the 20th December, and promoted to the rank of Sergeant on the 31st January 1942. He afterwards embarked on the 22nd February for the United Kingdom.

Sergeant Murray arrived at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth, on the 14th April and proceeded to No. 5 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit, Ternhill, Shropshire, on the 19th May for his advanced and night flying. He was posted to No. 57 Operational Training Unit, Eshott, Northumberland, on the 9th June, for conversion to and completion of his training on Spitfire fighter aircraft before posting early in September to No. 611 Squadron at Biggin Hill, Kent for operational flying.

During November Sergeant Murray embarked for overseas service in North Africa. Sergeant Murray was the pilot of a Spitfire aircraft engaged on the 1st December 1942 in a transfer flight from Maison Blanche to Bone in North Africa. The aircraft crashed into the ground while landing in darkness, Sergeant Murray losing his life. He was buried in the Bone Aerodrome Cemetery, Bone, Algeria.
