torpedo attack on the German warship "LUTZOW" sheltering in a fjord in Norway, and an anti-submarine patrol.

On the 15th September 1942 Flying Officer Murray was pilot of a Hampden bomber aircraft engaged on an anti-submarine patrol. The last message from the aircraft stated that it was landing on the sea forty miles east of Battery Head, Scotland. Exhaustive search failed to locate the aircraft or any of its crew who together with Flying Officer Murray, were consequently classified as missing. When due time had elapsed, Flying Officer Murray's death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 15th September, 1942 as the result of air operations.

The crew of the aircraft contained three other New Zealanders, Sergeant C.H. Bandon of Auckland, Sergeant D.S. Newman of Dunedin and Sergeant A.G. Brown of Rarotonga.
