Cambridgeshire on the 5th November, where he converted to Stirling bomber aircraft. Early in January 1944 he converted to Lancaster bomber aircraft at No. 3 Lancaster Finishing School, Feltwell, Suffolk, and on the 13th of the same month was posted to No. 15 Squadron at Mildenhall, Suffolk. With this squadron, as air gunner of Lancaster bomber aircraft, he took part in 3 operational flights, the targets including Stuttgart and Frankfurt, in Germany.

F/Sgt. McCallum was the mid upper gunner of a Lancaster aircraft which took off from Mildenhall on the night of the 24/25th March, 1944 to bomb Berlin. The aircraft failed to return to its base and all the crew, including F/Sgt. McCallum were classified as missing. Later information was received from a German official source that F/Sgt. McCallum had lost his life and in consequence he was reclassified to missing believed killed in action. Further information from the same source revealed that he was buried in the Town Cemetery, Teltow, 6 miles from Berlin. In due course his death was officially presumed to have occurred on the 24th March, 1944.
