R.A.F.118987 Flying Officer John Glen McCAULEY.
WIDOW: Mrs. J.D. Wallis of Devonport AUCKLAND (re-married)
SISTER: Mrs. E. Anderson of WANGANUI EAST.

John McCauley was born at Kaponga on the 12th November 1912. He proceeded to England early in November, 1937 in order to gain experience in newspaper advertising and was still there on the outbreak of war.

He was enlisted in the Royal Air Force on the 19th January, 1940, and was mobilised on the 18th June of the same year at No. 1 Manning Depot, Uxbridge, Middlesex. He was remustered to pilot under training and commenced his flying training on the 24th August. This training was terminated during September and on the 23rd of the month, he was transferred to the Clerical Branch, serving in this group until granted a commission in the Administrative and Special Duties Branch on the 18th March, 1942. He was promoted to Flying Officer on the 18th November 1942.

Flying Officer McCauley was a passenger in a Harrow aircraft of Transport Command proceeding on the night of the 19/20th December, 1942 from Port-Reath to Gibraltar. The aircraft failed to reach its destination and all the passengers and crew, including Flying Officer McCauley were classified as missing. Nothing further was heard of him and in due course it was presumed that he had lost his life at sea on the 19th December, 1942.
