A.402119 Flying Officer Patrick Howard McCAWE.
Father: Mr. P.J. McCawe of WELLINGTON.

Patrick McCawe was born in Wellington on December 2nd 1916 and received his secondary education at the Otago Boys' High School, Dunedin. His school sports were football, cricket and swimming and after leaving school he took up golf and tennis. At the time of applying for War Service in the Royal New Zealand Air Force on September 19th 1939 he was employed as a salesman by Messrs. J.R. McKenzie Limited, Wellington.

Flying Officer McCawe was enlisted at the Ground Training School, Levin on July 28th 1940 as Air Gunner under training and on August 24th was posted to Ohakea on an Air Gunner's Course. At Ohakea he was remustered to Air Observer, completing this course on December 10th 1940 and being commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer. He was further promoted to Flying Officer on December 10th 1941. Meanwhile he had been posted on January 6th 1941 to No. 2 General Reconnaissance Squadron, Nelson, on observer duties. In June he proceeded to Blenheim as Navigation Instructor. He was posted to Ohakea on a Reconnaissance Course early in March, 1942.

Flying Officer McCawe was the pilot of a Vickers Vincent aircraft which crashed into Tory Channel, on April 2nd 1942. The other members of the crew were Pilot Officer Nigel Bracken Hirst Newton and Aircraftman Cyril Vincent Williams.

Flying Officer McCawe was buried in the Blenheim Cemetery.
