from a German source advised that Acting Flight Lieutenant McConnell had lost his life. In consequence he was reclassified missing, believed killed, and subsequently his death was officially presumed. Further information received through the International Red Cross Committee advised that Flight Lieutenant McConnell was buried in the Rusthof Cemetery, Ameresfoort, Holland.

In January 1946 advice was received from Air Ministry that Flight Lieutenant McConnell had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the citation covering the award reading as hereunder:-
"Flight Lieutenant McConnell, as Air Bomber has completed numerous operations against the enemy, in the course of which he has invariably displayed the utmost fortitude, courage and devotion to duty."
