On the 15th October 1942 Sgt. McCord was wireless operator air gunner of the crew of a Wellington aircraft which took off on a cross country flight and crashed at Breck's Farm, Maplebeck, Nottinghamshire, all the members of the crew including Sgt. McCord losing their lives. He was buried in the Ardagh Cemetery, County Longford, Eire.

The other New Zealanders in the crew were - Sgt. V.X. Kirby of Mosgiel, Otago, Sgt. J.L. Lloyd of Dunedin, Sgt. J.R. Styles of Dunedin and Sgt. R.J. Fuller of Ngaruawahia.
