Terrance McCormack was born at Taradale, Hawkes Bay on the 6th May 1920. Wrestling was a sport in which he was interested. Prior to entering the Services, he was employed as a shepherd by Mr. J.A. McFarlane of "The Narrows", Hastings. He served for three months with the 4th Wellington Regiment.

Flight Sergeant McCormack was enlisted at Masterton on the 17th August 1942 where he was employed on aerodrome defence duties. On the 25th February 1943 he was posted to the Initial Training Wing, Rotorua and remustered to a wireless operator air gunner. On the satisfactory completion of the course he embarked for Canada on the 17th May to continue training under the Empire Air Training Scheme.

On arrival in Canada, F/Sgt. McCormack proceeded to No. 3 Wireless School, Winnipeg, Manitoba from where on the 10th December 1943 he proceeded to No. 3 Bombing and Gunnery School, Macdonald, also in Manitoba where he trained on Battle and Bolingbroke aircraft. At this school on the 12th March 1944 he was awarded the air gunner's badge and promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Six months later he was promoted to Flight Sergeant.
