Conversion Unit, Shepherds Grove, Suffolk, where he converted to Stirling bomber aircraft. F/Sgt. McCormack, joined No. 214 (Federated Malay States) Squadron, at Oulton, Norfolk, on the 20th September, and from this base as an air gunner on Fortress bomber aircraft, took part in 3 operational flights.

F/Sgt. McCormack was a member of the crew of a Fortress bomber which took off on the night of the 15/16th November 1944 on air operations against the enemy and on its return, due to bad visibility, crashed at Fakenham, Norfolk. As a result, all the crew lost their lives. F/Sgt. McCormack was buried with Service Honours in the Regional Cemetery, Cambridge. The other R.N.Z.A.F. members of the crew were F/Sgt. C.J. Ashworth of Rangiora, F/Sgt. E.R. Armstrong of Geraldine, Sgt. A. McLaughlin of Opotiki.
