Henderson says is the proper time to plant
cabbage and lettuce seed for wintering in
cold frames. Celery should be kept worked well
and hilled. If turnip seed did not come up
it is not too late to sow some hoping it will come.
Gather sweet corn and Lima beans; work
strawberry beds thoroughly; plow between the
rows and weed the rows.; some persons like
September planting but we do not. Spring
is best for making new beds. Work the winter
roots and keep them growing. In the flower
garden prepare plants for winter; plants
taken up now make better flowers. Report geraniums
that have been starved thro the summer.
Use light, rich soil and have good drainage;
some advise giving ammonia once a week
a tablespoonful to a gallon of warer. Begonias
like well drained sandy soil with fine well
rotted manure. Fertilize the rosebeds. If mildew
appears dissolve 1/2 oz sulphide of
potash in two gallons of water and spray.
It is wise to bring plants into the house
early, before frost comes to give them time to adapt
themselves to indoor conditions.
Exhibits were very good and in good variety
which was not to be expected after
the dry summer. The roses from Cedar Lawn
were many and as beautiful as those
June. Butter beans received praise; not
as large as Limas but come when they
Limas fail.

Questions
