Dr. Kirk, many years ago, read of
a "jumping bean" which made a stir
as a curiosity. Lately the explanation
was published; the jumping is caused
by a worm in the bean; the warmth
of the hand causes it to become so
lively the bean bounces up about five inches.
The bush producing the beans is a
native of Northern Mexico, grows about
four feet high. Margaret Magruder told
planting animated oats another curiosity.
E.S. Iddings read a Japanese invitation
to dinner.

Forethought

"Plant all the seeds not planted
in April and more of those already
planted for a succession and keep the
hoe bright with use. Set out pot plants
this month, egg plants, tomato and cabbage."

Sarah Farquhar wishes an answer to
A.G. Thomas question whether it pays
the housekeeper to raise chickens in any
but the scientific way, with incubators
brooders and prepared foods.
Various families were asked and the
answer differed widely, but when the
question was laid before the society and
guests, the vote was 31 in the affirmative
and not one negative!
