instead. I took over the C.E. & Y.C. to Ma Nyein
who has the Current Topics in chapel tomorrow
& last issue till Sept.

July 14, 1922 – Friday
Got the first acceptances from the Meth. this a.m.
Straightened out the last batch of books & maga-
zines [magazines] this aft., jobbing between times; will be so glad
when I've finished with this cluttered up conditon
of things; Forgot all about prayer meeting so the oth-
er [other] two went without me. Got a L.H.J. & News this
aft; read the latter, which proved to be an interest-
ing [interesting] no; was behind on the daily papers, so caught
up on them. S. wanted more cooking utensils
so I brought down my aluminum 12-in-1 set,
but that's not what he wants, so Miss P. says she
knows & will buy them; they stack up & can thus be
used over one hole & thus save charcoal. Was so tired
I went to bed as soon as I got up from dinner. In be-
tween [between] times I read some on the Y.C. Kept the girls in
Bible Class about 20 min. over time yes. aft., so had to
apologize this p.m. One of the Sagaing girls has typhoid
& is very ill; Ma Ma Gyi, her older sister, has sent word
to the Christian girls to pray for her, altho the family
are all strong Buddhists. We've now reached the 225
mark so we are to have a holiday on Mon. Charlie
Chaplin in "The Kid" is to be here tomorrow. I at once
planned to go, as all say it is fine, but the Girl Guides
are giving an entertainment under Mrs. H's direct-
ing [directing], at the very time that prevents you from going eith-
er [either] to the aft.or 1st eve performance; too bad all the
good things come at once. Can't find my little soft
silver mounted velvet brush, altho' marked plainly
with my initials, suppose it has gone the way of my
scent bottle. I'll still hope to get them back however;
Drove a nail in my bathroom for my small

mirror & one in the room for the Italian girl in
the brick wall successfully, had failed on a previous
trial in the room.

July15, 1922 – Saturday
Waked up as usual this a.m., but Saya Ma didn't come
till half past 7 as she feared I might be sleeping. She,
with her class & the 1st S. teacher, Ma Nyein, are planning
to go to a village in ox-carts about 7 miles from here
Mon. on an all-day evangelistic tour; I would like
to go too, but fear, on acct of the tea, I cannot accom-
pany [accompany] them. I finished the little sleeveless sweater
I began for Saya Ah Sou's little girl, by working
on it about an hr. this a.m. & about the same length
of time this aft. Read both I.J.'s this morn. & made
the fudge right after break; also looked at the pic-
ture [picture] section of the last N.Y. Times I found in the sitting-
room [sittingroom]. Got two more L.H.J's which I later loaned,
with the one that came yes., to Mrs. H., as she'd have a
good chance to read them over the week-end. They
brought me Dr. McC's book, "New Paths Through Old
Palestine" by Margaret Slattery Thurs. aft. Looked over
some deaf material to send Miss Campbell, but am
not thru that job yet. They sent us word to come at 5
instead of 5:30; we did so, but it was the later time at
which they began after all. Greatly to my surprise, it
seems from something she said, that Mrs. H. is a sec-
ond [second] wife; I was somewhat startled on arriving here to
find that most of the men had 2nd or even 3rd wives,
it seems the life, climatic or otherwise, is harder on
the women than their husbands. Gathered up soiled
clothes, & later, when the dhoby arrived, about the time we
returned from the party (it was very nice & we had
icecream, which at least is cold, so always hits the
spot with me), counted both them & the clean ones out.
The girls did not fix my bed last eve. No water yes.
