Office of Light-House Inspector, Twelfth District, San Francisco, Cal., July 24th, 1872

Professor Joseph Henry, Chairman Light House Board Sir: I have the honor to report the sailing of the Shubrick for the North with the Lampist on board provided with lathe, necessary tools and material for the thorough repair of all the Light Houses north of this place. The Lampist was also directed to instruct the Keepers in their duties and see that everything is in thorough order. Major Robert, Light House Engineer of the 13th District has had great difficulty in procuring trans portation to Cape Foulweather, of the light house, and at his request I had it placed on board the “Shubrick” with orders to the Captain to deliver it at that place. PORTLAND, OREGON, Sept 7 1872

Chairman Light House Board,

Washington, D.C.

SIR: I have to submit the following Report of Operations for the month of August 1872: Cape Foulweather Lt. Station, Ogn. Brick work completed in Tower 6 ft above lower floor, & in Oil House 4 ft above floor. Received & cleaned Metal Work ere??? “Shubrick”. Placed stone steps & sills, & Iron Work as far as work (Brick) has progressed. Shipped 1 Cargo Bricks Cement & Lime from San Francisco. Keepers' Dwelling enclosed, floors laid, 2 coats paint outside, 1 coat plaster on 1st floor, & lathed on 2nd floor. Probably Operations in September. Receive cargo, & ship balance of materials, including, lantern, from San Francisco. Continue work with full force of men on Lt. Ho. & Dwelling. General Work. Engaged on Estimates for Repairs & Improvements.

Buoyage Coos Bay & Yaquina Bay

Renewal of agreement for

Dec. 5th 79

Sir:

Referring to your letter of Nov. 24th, asking directions relative to the renewal of the agreement for the care of the buoys in Coos Bay and Yaquina Bay, I have to say that the Board desires you to make the best terms you can for the care of these buoys for the present.

It is believed that the tender Shubrick will be permanently assigned to the 13th L.H. District early in Feb'y, and that she will be able to attend to the buoyage of the entire district.

1871 Mar 14 From Engineer Secy Maj. G. H. Elliot To Col. R.S. Williamson Corps Engineers Sir: Referring to your letter of the 6th instant I have to say that the employment of a photographer on the terms heretofore state by you to go in the "Shubrick" on her next trip for the supply of the Pacific Coast lights is approved.

Mar 15 From Chrmn. L.H.B Rear Adml. W.B. Shubrick To Major H.M. Robert Corps Engineers Your letter of the 4th instant addressed to the Secretary of the Treasury reporting for duty in the Light House Establishment has been received at this office and I have to inform you that you are assigned to duty as Light House Engineer of the 13th Light House District which embraces the Pacific Coast of the United State north of the northern boundary of California. Col. R. S. Williamson U.S.A.

Engineers, Light House Engineer for the 12th &13th Districts, will turn over to you the property pertaining to the 13th District, and the directions which he has received from this Board in relation to it.
