Sir:

The bill for survey of Yaquina reservation reffered to by your letter of the 18th instant can be paid if you con state on the face of the voucher, "ordered prior to July 1st, 1870"

Mileage cannot be paid to a civilian employe. In such cases actual necessary expenses, certified to by the employe are allowed.

Referring to your letter of the 19th instant, I have to inform you that Mr. J. A. Sesowrd has been entered on our books as Superintendent of Construction instead of draughtsman, and you may so rate him in your future returns.

I have to inform you that J. T. Ames of Chicopee, Massachusetts, has a contract for making a first order lantern for the Cape Foulweather Light House and has agreed to have it finished ready to be sent to you, Care of Col. Williamson, San Francisco, by the 1st of January 1872.

The official oath of said J. T. Robert was also received and sent to the Commissioner of Customs.

The two contracts with B. Simpson and Joseph Bien for work on Yaquina Bay Light House are herewith returned approved and also the contract with C. F. Brown for building Keeper's dwelling at Cape Disappointment, Washington Territory, of which there is but one copy in this office.

Sir:

The request made to the Commissioner of Customs of which you were informed on the 9th inst. that $774.86 be sent to Col. Duane to pay for the Fog Signal at Cape Flattery has been recalled, and he has been requested instead to send a like sum from the appropriation for expenses of Fog Signals for 1872 for that purpose.

I beg to present to your acquaintance Mr. Chas Nordhoff, for a long time Editor in Chief of one of our principal New York daily papers, who visits the Pacific Coast for literary purposes. He is commended to your courtesies as he has expressed much interest in the workings of the Light House Establishment on your coast.

Sir: In reply to your letter of the 2nd instant, I have to inform you that monthly reports of operations should be forwarded to the Board as soon after the close of the month as possible, so as to embody the month's actual operations.

Sir: The U.S. Treasurer informs this office that your deposits with the Sub Treasury at San Francisco and with the 1st Nat'l Bank, Portland, Oregon, are not divided into Light House funds and Engineer funds.

It is important that this division be made at the bank and you will please attend to it that it be done as soon as practicable, and hereafter you will keep the accounts at the bank separate.

instant, you are authorized to enter into contraction written tenders for material, labor and transportation for Cape Foulweather Light House, requiring an answer within ten days and sending the tenders to the most reliable parties.

There is a clause in the appropriation bill which, if passed, will hold the appropriation good for two years from the time the site is obtained and jurisdiction ceded. You will be further informed on this point after the passage of the bill.

In reply to your letter of the 6th instant relative to Light House reservation at Yaquina, I have to say that the 20 acres referred to should be surveyed and permanent parks planted and report should be made as to whether these 20 acres will be sufficient for the purpose.
