729 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jan 4 1886 Be it remembered that on this 4th day of January 1886, the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council chamber pursuant to call, the following officers being present, viz: His Honor the Mayor Henry L Yesler and Councilmen J Furth, H Calligan, W A Harrington, Geo W Hall, John Keenen T W Lake, Charles McDonald, J J Post And G W Young when the following proceedings were had to wit: Petitions and Communications Petition of J W VanBrocklein et al praying that the sidewalk of Terrace Street between Fourth Street and Sixth Street be repaired. Read and Referred to Street Com. Petition of A Elliott et al praying that a certain portion of Jackson Street be planked. Read and Referred to Street Committee and recommended by said committee that the petition be laid on the table. Report adopted and petition tabled. Petition of Frankenthal Bros et al praying that Jackson Street be planked from Commercial Street to Third Street twenty four feet in width. Read and on motion said is granted in so far as to plank said street from Commercial Street to the planking on Second Street 24 feet wide. Petition of J B Collins and J Howson praying that boot blacks be licensed in the City of Seattle read and on motion tabled. Petition of W R Brawley et al praying that the north side of Main Street be planked. Read and referred to Street Committee Petition of Wm M Preston praying taht Box Street be opened, read and referred to Street Committee

740 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE On motion Committee on Beach Road given until the next regular meeting of the council to report. On motion the Street Committee is given further time to report on the Terrace Street sidewalk On motionH L Yesler is granted permission to put a sewer in the alley in Block 9 of Maynard's plat to connect with Washington Street sewer. Ordinances An ordinance is submitted by the City Attorney entitled "An ordinance to license the business of selling fruit trees" which after discussion is on motion referred back to the City Attorney. Councilmen Keenen Post & Young voting no An Ordinance is submitted by the Clerk entitled "A special ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills" which upon due consideration is passed by the following vote viz: In favor of the same R H Calligan, J Furth, Geo W Hall, W A Harrington, John Keenen, T W Lake, Chas McDonald, J J Post and Geo W Young. 121 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Dec 3 1886 Report of City Jailor for the month of November referred to the Finance Committee Report of the City Treasurer for month of November is read and referred to the Finance Committee. Committee Reports Received From Committee on License and Revenue recommending that the petition of J W Jones for permission to peddle articles of his own manufacture without a license be granted and recommending that the Hawkers license Ordinance be so amended as to permit persons to sell goods manufactured by themselves within the City Limits without obtaining a license therefore. Report adopted & City Atty directed to draw and submit the necessary ordinance. From Street Light Com. on petition of J W Van Brocklin et al for street lights Corner of 5th & Terrace & Sixth & Terrace Streets recommending that the same be granted. Adopted. From Same Com. on petition ofJones & Hubbell et al for Street Lights in the Railroad Alley from Columbia to Madison Street recommending that the same be granted. Adopted From same Com. rejecting the petition of Jas E Houghton fpr Street Lights onPine & 9th & 10th streets. 396 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Mar 2 1888 of wharves to deep water from at least three of the streets in the center of the business portion of the City, read & referred to the Street Committee. Application of F. D. Sprague for appointment on the Police Force, read and tabled. Petition of the L M Wood & others for grading Third Street from Depot Street to Virginia Street and Virginia Street from Fourth Street to West Street and building sidewalks on both sides of said streets read & refered to the Street Committee. Petition of T. H. Hackett for permission to move building across Madison Street read and granted. Petition of F E Sander & J. W. George for permission to tear away the old shed on the north side of Clancys old Livery Stable Corner Second & Main Streets and erect instead a two story wooden building, read & referred to Committee on Fire & Water. Petition of Adolph Krug & others for grading & building sidewalks on both sides of Vine Streets from its inter-section with Depot Street to the Bay, read and referred to Street Committee. Petition of J. W. Van Brocklein & others for grading Terrace Street and building sidewalks on both sides of said street, from its intersection with Mill Street to Thirteenth Street, read and referred to the Street Committee. Petition of Wm McCoy for permission to erect a boot black stand on South Second Street next to the Standard Theatre; read & referred to the Street Committee.
